Li[Li0.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13]O2 is prepared via a co-precipitation followed by heat treatment then ball milled with hollow Li3PO4.XRD show that Li[Li0.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13]O2with well layered structure is obtained and the structure is not changed after modification.SEM reveals that the particle size of Li[Li0.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13]O2 is reduced and the surface is covered with Li3PO4 layer.Significant improvements in discharge capacity and rate capability are achieved by surface modified with Li3PO4.The Li3PO4-coated sample delivers a reversible capacity of 284.7 mAh/g at 0.05C in the first cycle,which is higher than that of the pristine sample (244 mAh/g).The enhanced electrochemical performance is attributed to the reduced particle size,suppression of the reaction between cathode and electrolyte and the improved conductivity by Li3PO4 coating.
