Ca2+-dependent exocytosis of signalling substances is one of the most important tasks of any cell in our body.Through that process nerve cells release neurotransmitters and signaling peptides, neuroendocrine cells release hormones or immune cells release toxic substances.Given the importance of this process it is not surprising that a large number of molecules are mediating and regulating Ca2+-dependent exocytosis.Chromaffin cells from the adrenal medulla, which store adrenaline and noradrenaline in large dense-core vesicles and release them upon sympathetic activation into the blood stream, are a particularly useful model system to study Ca2+-dependent exocytosis.
