A variational level set model for multiphase piecewise smooth image segmentation on implicit surface is presented in this paper which can be considered as an extension to classic Chan-Vese model used to planar image segmentation. The contours on the surface are expressed via intersections between zero level set of the underlying surface which is fixed and other zero level sets of dynamic level set functions. The energy functional is constructed using a general characteristic function for surface region partitioning and the definition of intrinsic gradients. In order to avoid the re-initialization of level set functions, the energy functional includes the penalty term of level set functions as signed distance functions. The evolution equations of level set functions and smooth parameter estimation are derived using variational methods, which are solved through finite difference schemes. Finally, some numerical experiments validate the variational model and the finite difference schemes suggested in this paper.
