The major objective of this study is to facilitate the elimination of uncertainties associated with the effect of clay chemical structure on various stages (ignition, heat release rates and charring) combustion process of polymer nanocomposites.For this purpose, sodium montmoriilonite was modified with metal salt solutions to amplify the content of metal-ions (MIs) like Mg2+, Al3+ and Fe3+, all commonly present in natural montmorillonite in varied proportions.MI modifications were quantified using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES).
