Objectives:This study assesses the effect of Tai chi on balance among elderly women.Methods: Sixteen elderly women volunteers participated in Tai chi intervention programs that lasted for 1 h,five times a week for 16 weeks.An eight-week follow-up interview was conducted after intervention.Balance tests were administered before training on the 4th,8th,12th,and 16th week during training and on the 4th and 8th week after the training ended.The time,displacement-X,displacement-Y with single-leg with eyes open(SLO),and single-leg with eyes close(SLC)were measured.Results: TIME-SLO/SLC significantly increased from the 4th week,whereas DX-SLO/SLC and DY-SLO/SLC significantly decreased from the 8th week.The trend did not change after the intervention ended.Conclusion: Tai chi can improve the balancing ability of elderly women.Improvements in the balancing ability were sustained during the eight-week follow-up interview.Therefore,elderly people can consider Tai chi as a balancing exercise.
