It is of high importance to develop and validate a series of suitable protocols for the ecological monitoring of the quality and properties of pyrolysis products labelled as "BIOCHARs",and to initiate the establishment regulatory constrains and procedures required to be implemented in the product characterization chain. This contribution outlines a current experimental awareness in the area of ecotoxicology and mutagenic effects of various biochar pyrolysis products that may be promoted for use in agriculture.Bacterial testing protocols were evaluated for their abilities to detect mutagenic compounds which may be present in the biochars.Optimised protocols for Solid agar AMES and 96-well liquid AMES fluctuation test were established, and can be used for the rapid screening of biochar products. This allows the validation of aspects of the quality of products and optimisation of operational parameters for pyrolysis (effect of feedstock materials, pyrolysis temperature and time) for the production a safe product for agricultural and environmental application.
