A study has been undertaken of the temperature rise prediction for a medium voltage (MV) switching cabinet using a three dimensional finite element model. The features of key hardware components and factors affecting the prediction accuracy are discussed.A simplified model is employed to determine the heating effects due to contact resistance. Results show that the predicted temperature rise follows the patterns obtained from measurement and the major discrepancy caused by uncertainties in the determination of contact resistance inside the vacuum circuit breakers and movable contact fingers fastened by elastic rings. The roles of gas flow are analyzed.
