Twelve duan jin is a kind of qigong and recommended as chinese traditional sport, involving physical activity, breathing exercise and psychological adjustment.Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the physiological indicators of Twelve duan jin to ameliorate cardiopulmonary function in elder females. Methods: Thirty healthy elder females (65±5 years old) had fitness habit two to three times per week. Before one bout of qigong testing, subjects received 3 months of training Twelve duan jin (1 h/d, 5-7 d/week).Test body composition, central aortic pressure (CAP) and arteriosclerosis by body composition tester (Inbody720),central aortic pressure and atherosclerosis detectors (OMRON) before and after three months training.Cortex was applied to monitor energy and gas metabolism.during one bout of qigong exercise. Results: (1) Left and right brachial-ankle artery PWV(baPWV) reduced (1562.90±479.50 vs.1217.82±133.23, P<0.01 ;1481.45±280.87vs.1324.86±177.38, P<0.05) significantly after training;(2) Left and right Ankle-brachial index was lower than before (1.18±0.19 vs.1.08±0.05, P<0.05;1.16±0.20 vs.1.06±0.05, P<0.01);(3) Systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, pulse pressure and augmentation index(AI) reduced apparently (P<0.05);(4) BMI, PBF and WHR decreased (27.42±3.49 vs.26.51±3.44, P<0.01;37.54±5.45 vs.34.34±6.00, P<0.01;0.96±0.04 vs.0.93±0.05, P<0.01) significantly.BMR and SMM were higher than before training (1300.56± 171.82 vs.1315.05± 175.11,P<0.05;23.29±4.65 vs.23.77±4.69, P<0.05).(5) The energy and gas metabolism indexes in minute ventilation, oxygen uptake, METS increased slowly then reduced to the level of beginning quiet phase in recovery period. Conclusion: Results suggest Twelve duan jin can strengthen elasticity of blood vessels, reduce the risk of atherosclerosis, regulate blood pressure in elder females.Additionally, Twelve duan jin can lower fat content. Therefore, exercise can enhance motor function and to be suitable exercise for improving cardiopulmonary function.
