Objective To investigate the effect of delayed cord clamping on reference ranges of preductal oxygen saturation (SpO2) for healthy term neonates in first 10 minutes after birth.Methods From Sept 2014 to Feb 2015, 227 mother-infant eligible pairs were selected and randomised to delayed cord clamping(≥60 seconds after delivery, n=125) or immediate cord clamping (≤30 seconds after delivery, n=102).SPO2 recordings of term neonates with regular respiratory pattern were evaluated.10th-95th percentile charts of SpO2 from 1 minute to 10 minutes after birth were drawn.Results infants subjected to delayed cord clamping had a higher SpO2(P<0.05) in the first 4 min.Conclusions Delayed cord clamping, compared with immediate cord clamping, resulted in improved SpO2 in the first minutes, and facilitated a smooth transition to systemic and cerebral oxygenation following birth.
