Cerebral sparganosis is a severe parasitic infection caused by the larvae of Spirometra mansoni.The authors report the case of a 63-year-old man with cerebral sparganosis resulting from infection with a larva of Spirometra and review the literature on cerebral sparganosis.Magnetic resonance(MR) imaging revealed a mass lesion with prominent perifocal oedema in the left parietal lobe.The lesion was presented as slight hypointensity on Tl-weighted images but slight hypedntensity on T2-weighted images,and demonstrated abnormal enhancements with the pattern of a peripheral ring shape on enhanced MR scans.Advanced imaging including MR spectroscopy was performed.An single-voxel MR spectroscopy showed a dramatically increased choline level and no significantly decreased N-acetylaspartate(NAA) level in this lesion,which is a new finding that should be confirmed by.more cases.Following treatment,the patient's neurological deficits markedly improved.
