Methane is produced in the rumen of ruminants by a subgroup of archaea known collectively as methanogens.Ruminal dietary lipid and propionate precursors, such as malate and fumarate increases propionate and decrease methane. This may alter the growth of the prominent ruminal methanogen and favorably alter the mixed ruminal microorganism fermentation. The objective of this study was to detect the rumen fermentation characteristics and their effect on mathanogenic diversity in the rumen ecosystem in Yanbian Yellow steers fed linseed oil and propionate precursors using 454 tag-amplicon pyrosequencing analysis. The combination of linseed oil and propionate precursors in the diet increased rumen pH, total VFA concentrations and the molar proportion of propionate in this study.Surveys on the rumen archaea suggest that Methanobrvibacter is numerically the most dominant genus.Three main groups: Methanobrevibacter, Methanosphaera, and Methanomicrobium in total rumen contents were found. The genus Methanobrvibacter (average 97.09%) was the absolutely predominant genus in all libraries of methanogen communities, followed by genus Methanosphaera (average 2.72%).In the linseed oil and propionate precursors libraries, a higher population of genus Methanobrevibacter was found compared to the control and linseed oil libraries.Furthermore, a numerically decreased abundant of Methanosphaera and Methanobacteriaceae were found in the linseed oil-supplemented with propionate precursors libraries.Feeding a diet supplemented with a moderate level of linseed oil and propionate precursors altered the ruminal fermentation pattern, and this alteration is accompanied with changes in methanogen communities in rumen ecosystem in Yanbian Yellow steers.
