The need to restructure our society into a sustainable society has been recognised by many, Though a clear direction in this process usually fails. At the Research Institute Built Environment for Tomorrow, this has been summarised as the Concept of O: O for a circular approach of resource management, and 0 (zero) for 0-impacts of our activities, 0-energy, 0-materials, 0-water, 0-1anduse and 0-air pollution. The transition aiming at 0-energy buildings has been launched.Such a transition is also needed regarding materials, although less known and investigated. The production of materials requires enormous amounts of energy, and many materials resources (will) become scarce.Similar to energy, this will require the increased use of renewable resources: materials that do not deplete, However these also have to be produced, in order to maintain a balance between use and growth.Analogous to the 0-energy building, we need to develop a 0-materials building: A building/house completely based on renewable materials, and produced within the building sites boundaries, as part of a closed cycle approach within a limited system.Land use is a common decisive factor in managing these resources. At the other end of the spectrum are Urban areas. To bring existing urban areas to 0-impact built environments, requires a drastic re-development, in which all m2s are made productive, and many functions redeveloped into services instead of provided by products.
