This paper derives a domain formulation of the interaction integral for computing the stress intensity factors (SIFs).The interaction integral has two advantages: one is that the present interaction integral does not require material properties to be differentiable and the other is that it is domain-independent for complex interfaces.Due to these advantages, the interaction integral may become one of most promising techniques in analyzing the crack problems of composites. Then, the numerical implementation of the interaction integral combined with the extended finite element method (XFEM) is introduced.Using this method, the crack problems of a particle-reinforced elastic composite plate are studied to show the influences of the microstructure of the plate on their performance.
