  Short distance wireless communication technology is one of the most important technologies of wireless sensor network.At present, short distance wireless communication technology mainly includes Bluetooth, wireless 802.15.4 (Wi-Fi), infrared data transmission (IrDA), ZigBee, etc.A kind of Radio Frequency (RF) communication technology provides a new path to wireless communication network.This technology adopts ISM frequency segment of internet general without a license, which has characters of low transmitting power and high receiving sensitivity.Its communication distance ranges from serial decameter to number hectometer.In this study, a wireless communication system was built based on an nRf905 transmission module to control leaf wetness sensor for monitoring real-time plant leaf wetness.Experiments were conducted in a corn field of experimental farm of USDA-ARS-APMRU in College Station, Texas.Transmitter-to-receiver distance was considered as an impact factor on wireless communication.A distance of 40m was defined as a stable communication distance for the nRF905 wireless transmission module in field applications.The wireless communication system introduced here offers real potential for reliably monitoring leaf wetness status in crops.The smart sensor array reliably recorded and transmitted the readings of the leaf wetness sensors.
