In precision agriculture, near-ground radio-frequency signal isconsidered as the most promising medium to transfer agricultural information for its convenient wireless connectivity, especially in applications based on wireless sensor network (WSN).However, due to the complexity and variability of agricultural environments, propagation characteristics of near-ground radio-frequency signal in precision agriculture areunpredictable and unstable, which could easily result in communication failure, so propagation characteristics have become one of the most principal bottlenecks in wireless data transmission for precision agriculture. To promote the widespread development of WSN in precision agriculture, firstly, existing researchresults of propagation characteristics of near-ground radio-frequency signals in different agricultural application environments such as greenhouse, orchard and paddy field are reviewed.Secondly, models of propagation characteristics categorized froman empirical or theoretical standpoint are presented, which can be used to describe the propagation characteristics in a quantitative or qualitative way.Furthermore, according to data transmission service demands in precision agriculture, propagation characteristics of near-ground radio-frequency signals with different frequency values are compared and analyzed to provide a better choice of transmission mode for some agricultural applications. Finally, challenges of theoretical and applied research on propagation characteristics of near-ground radio-frequency signal are presented, from which researcherscan get some clues forfurther studies. The review is to provide a prospect for the research on propagation characteristics of near-ground radio-frequency signal in agricultural fields, and to give support to the widespread applications of WSN in agricultural information acquisition for precision agriculture.
