Aspergillus flavus is the main agent of aflatoxin contamination in pistachio.Saprophytic yeasts are common on the surface of plant fruits and leaves and can reduce Aspergillus populations and toxin production on nuts.This project is laboratory part of a two year study in which the potential of yeasts as effective biocontrol agents against A.flavus PTCC 5006 was investigated.Five selected saprophytic yeast (Y76,Y80,Y81,Y90 and Y93) isolated from Rafsanjan pistachio orchards on selective media,significantly reduced both fungal growth and aflatoxin production which was confirmed by HPLC analysis.The amount of growth was assessed by scoring in a visual system as well as determination of fungal dry weight.Y76 restricted fungal growth effectively.Sporulation was limited due to the inhibitory effect of yeasts by 62-85% There was a significant decrease in fungal dry mass (69-86%) and aflatoxin production was reduced by 73% to 89%.
