Preparation and Properties of Eu3+ doped ZnO Glass Ceramics

  Transparent glass ceramics containing ZnO nanocrystals undoped and doped with Eu3+ were prepared by the heat treatment of the precursor alumino zinc silicate (AZS) glasses at 750 ℃C for different times.The homogeneous precipitation of ZnO nanocrystals with mean size of 11 nm was characterized in the AZS glass ceramics heat treated for 5 min by X-ray diffraction (XRD).Under 325 nm excitation, a wide-band yellow emission maximum at 590 nm were generated in the undoped AZS glass ceramic while additional sharp red emission loacted at 612 nm produced in the Eu3+ doped AZS glass ceramics heat treated for 5min.The yellow emission decreased and the red emission disappeared with the longer heat treatment time.The red luminescence increased while yellow luminescence decreased with the increase of Eu3+ concentration.Energy transfer exsit between ZnO nanocrystals and Eu3+ in the gass ceramics was investigated.The luminescence proportion of red and yellow emission was calculated and the results demonstrated that the efficiency of energy transfer of ZnO nanocrystals to Eu3+ was 0.8%, 7.5%, 9.8%, 12.3%with the concentration of doped Eu3+ was 0.01, 0.025, 0.05, 0.1 mol%, respectively.
