The group Ⅰ.lb thaumarchaeota dominates over group Ⅰ.la in most soil environments, but little is known about the impact of temperature on their membrane glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraether lipids (GDGTs).Archaeal isoprenoid GDGTs (iGDGTs), in particular crenarchaeol and its regioisomer, were investigated in Chinese modem soils, and their distributions and concentrations were compared with those found in other environments where group Ⅰ.1a thaumarchaeota likely dominate.
