Objective:To evaluate the clinical outcomes in peritoneal dialysis(PD)patients who received standardized retraining in The First Affiliated Hospital of Zhen Jiang University, the second largest center in China. Methods: This retrospective study comprised PD patients 18 years or older at the start of PD and during survival for at least for 90 d after the first treatment at our center from January 2005 to June2014.The1,520 patients were divided into two groups according to whether they had been retrained.Group 1(952)had received specification retraining;group 2(568)had not been retrained. The differences in survival rate, technical survival rate, and complications were compared between the two groups. Results: The differences between the two groups inpatient and technical survival rates were significant(all,P=0.000),especially in the younger patients(i.e.,<65 years)(P=0.001,P=0.000,respectively).The incidences of PD-related peritonitis and hospitalization were lower in the younger patients in group 1 patients(P=0.041,P=0.009,respectively).The incidences of the exit-site(and/or tunnel)infections, cardiovascular events, cerebrovascular events, and malnutrition between the two groups were not significant different(all,P> 0.05).Conclusion: The results showed that the differences in patient and technique survival rates between the two elderly groups were not significant(P=0.058,P=0.549,respectively).But the younger PD patients who underwent retraining(group 1)had higher patient and technique survival rates than that of those who had no retraining(group 2).In younger retrained patients, the incidences of PD-related peritonitis and hospitalization were lower. The results indicated that standardized retraining plays a large role in the survival of PD patients, especially that of younger patients.
