第一代生物质精炼技术与人争粮、与粮争地;第二代技术源自煤化工技术(热-化学法,没有选择性)和微生物发酵技术(生物化学法,又称为糖中间体法,包括纤维素乙醇、藻类和微生物油脂技术),由于植物含碳量、密度低于煤炭,含糖量低于谷物,且较谷物难以水解,第二代技术产品单一,产品成本远高于煤化工产品和粮食为原料的产品成本.
