A fishery-independent dredge-based survey has been used to assess the sea scallop (Placopecten magellanicus) resource of Maines coastal waters since 2002.The survey is conducted during late October-November prior to the opening of the commercial season.Although Maine scallop landings are currently low (only 137 thsd.lbs.in 2008), the value of the fishery is generally among the top ten marine resources for the state, and at times has been valued second only to lobster.
