The insect epidermis, a critical protection shell, mainly consist of chitin, different cuticular protein and pigment substance. The pigmentation patterns of insects exhibits considerable diversity and is an outstanding model system by which we can understand color pattern evolution. It could be changed in response to various selective pressures, such as threats from predators, sexual selection and environment exchange. All insects must molt because of the limited ductibility of the epidermis and form new epidermis during each molting. So far, the molecular mechanisms underlying the reconstruction of new epidermis and pigmentation patterns are not fully understand.
