Defensins are a major family of antimicrobial peptides expressed predominantly in neutrophils and epithelial cells,and play important roles in innate immune defense against infectious pathogens.On the basis of disulfide topology,defensins are classified into three structural families: alpha,beta,and theta.In humans,there exist only alpha-and beta-defensins.To date,six human alpha-defensins have been identified,including human neutrophil defensins 1–4,known as human neutrophil peptides or HNPs 1–4,and human enteric defensins 5–6 or HD5 and HD6.
