This work reports on the use of the Laser Zone Melting method to induce doping of commercial glass substrates in order to fabricate photonic elements from commercially available materials. The method is based on a recent patent, especially applicable to process glass and ceramics with low thermal shock resistance.A CO2 laser was employed for the axial and directional introduction of dopants into pre-heated commercial silica rods placed onto a rotational platform. The compositional profile induced within the rods provokes the appearance of a refractive index gradient. Thus,GRIN [GRadient-INdex] materials can be obtained.
