Enhancing the collective response to a weak input signal is an important and challenging problem in a variety of fields, not only in that of traditional signal processing but also in those such as particle physics, gravitational wave search, and medical science.Many natural and artificial information-processing systems are connected together to form functional networks and spontaneously adjust their internal machinery to enhance the sensitivity to external signals.
