An increase in nutrients in the continental shelf is always thought to be associated to coastal upwelling,but it may not necessarily be the case in the continental shelf near the Pearl River estuary.The Pearl River is the 2nd largest in China and flows out into the continental shelf of the northern South China Sea,forming an estuarine coastal plume on the continental shelf.The southwest monsoon is dominant in the region during summer and results in coastal upwelling.However,the upwelling does not appear to bring rich nutrients to the surface layer from deeper South China Sea.
