Sediment accumulation rates and carbon burial in the northern South China Sea

Studies of the fate of carbon in marginal seas are vitally important to understanding of the ocean carbon cycle.As a part of the CHOICE-C project,an integrated study of carbon dynamics in the marginal sea,wequantify burial rates of organic carbon (OC) in the shelf of northern South China Sea.Sediment accumulation rate were calculated using excess 210Pb profiles in the sediment column.The results show that a total of 2.5*1012 g/yr of OC is preserved in shelf sediments.High OC flux in the sediment close to the Pearl Rivers mouth and in the east of the Leizhou Peninsula and southeast of the Zhanjiang Bay suggests that riverine discharge and upwelling are key factors regulating OC burial over the shelf.
