We studied the utility of coxI and ITS sequence variation at various taxonomic levels within species of Stephanodiscus Ehrenb., investigating what appear to be several very closely related species based upon previous morphological, molecular and physiological research.Diatoms in the Stephanodiscus niagarae complex offer the opportunity to examine ITS evolution in the light of recent cladogenetic events.
