We review the phylogenetic relationships of the freshwater gomphonemoid diatoms sensu Kociolek &Stoermer, based on morphological data.We present the newly described genus Gomphosinica, which has species in North America and China.We also present light and scanning electron microscope observations on new Gomphoneis species described from Lake Baikal and western China.These are from the lineage of Gomphoneis that includes the generitype, G.elegans, with astigrnoid and quadristigmoid taxa.
