Type 2 diabetes mellitus has become a critical health problem that has been increasing worldwide.Uncontrolled hyperglycaemia increased oxidative stress and decreased antioxidative activity resulting in increasing risk of cardiovascular disease.Exercise training becomes more popularly recommended as an additional therapy in patients with diabetes type 2 to reduce hyperglycemia and improve oxidative stress.Although moderate exercise at least five days per week was recommended to prevent cardiovascular disease, it is difficult to encourage the patients to do moderate exercise regularly.A simple, low intensity and easily accessible exercise is therefore a better successful approach to incorporate into daily activity. There are many modes of exercise that are convenient, have low impact on the joints and effective at home fitness program e.g.arm swing exercise, Thai wand exercise and Thai yoga.Arm swing exercise (ASE) is a simple low-intensity traditional Chinese exercise that has been popular for more than 50 years. We demonstrated a potential protective effect of the low-intensity ASE training on vascular complication, which is a major problem in type 2 diabetic patients. The protective effect may be attributed to an improved oxidative stress in according to either improved glycaemic control or exercise per se.This research group also found that response of cardio-pulmonary function during the ASE is mild. Moreover, carbohydrate was largely more utilized as fuel for the ASE.We also demonstrated that Thai Wand Exercise training can improve general health perceptions subscale of HRQOL, functional capacity, body flexibility and obesity in older individuals. This may be helpful for diabetes type Ⅱ.Moreover, we showed that Thai yoga may also have benefits for diabetes type Ⅱ in terms of stress management stemming from the meditation, relaxation and message aspects of the system.
