In plants, sugars fuel cellular carbon and energy metabolism and promote growth, while sugar demanding/starvation stimulates photosynthesis and reserve mobilization.Sugar starvation stimulate sugar production and flux from source tissues (photosynthetic mature leaves) to sink tissues (growing tissues, young leaves and storage organs) and impacts ultimate crop productivity.
