Physiological studies in the past show that the interaction between embryo and endosperm plays important roles in coordinating the seed development. However, signal molecules involved in the embryo-endosperm communication are largely unknown. Our studies showed that one member of the CLAVATA3/EMBRYO SURROUNDING REGION (CLE) family polypeptide hormone, CLE-E, regulates both the embryo and endosperm development in Arabidopsis.
