Background: Suicide by ingesting pesticide has been one of the leading lethal methods for persons 65 years old or above in Taiwan, while restricting accessibility can be an effective strategy in reducing it.Levels of urbanization and percentage of agricultural population of the residences are posited to relate to suicide by ingesting pesticide. Methods: All townships in Taiwan were categorized into 7 kinds on the basis of levels of development defined by population density, proportion of residents with higher education, proportion of agricultural population, and proportion of elderly population as well as levels of healthcare resources.Suicide rates by ingesting pesticide were first analyzed by age groups, gender, and different kinds of townships for the years 2002 through 2009.Having had both data of suicide attempters from the National Suicide Surveillance System (NSSS) and National Mortality Dataset in Taiwan, lethality of attempts by ingesting pesticide were further examined by attempt per each suicide death ratiofor the years 2007 through 2009.Results: From 2002 to 2009, an increasing trend of suicide by ingesting pesticide was noted in males 65 years old or above.Further analyses revealed that this rising trend occurred within townships characterized by higher percentage of agricultural and elderly population.Ingesting pesticide accounted for around 50% of suicide deaths for persons 65 years old or above in these townships.Furthermore, given the lower attempt per each suicide death ratio, ingesting pesticide were considered to have higher lethality compared to other methods registered in the NSSS, especially for persons aged 65 years old or above. Conclusion: Efforts of restricting access to pesticide is of great importance for certain townships characterized by higher proportion of agricultural and elderly population in Taiwan.Given the high lethality, special follow-up protocol may be needed for elderly attempters by ingesting pesticide in the NSSS.
