In the Western urban context, the typical suburb is often depicted as a middle-class residential enclave, characterized by low-density and uniform detached houses. However, looking back at the history of the origin of such bourgeois utopias,it is quite clear that the process in which the socalled typical suburbs formed are not necessarily the only path which happens inevitably under all circumstances. The fact that various types of the suburbs exist around the world makes it necessary to clarify their different meanings in order to conceptualize urban peripheries in a worldwide context.
