The silicon-on-insulator (SOI) has become one of the most promising platforms for integrated optics in fiber-optic communication, attributing to the combination of low transmission loss, high reflective index contrast, and compatible fabrication processes with complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology. However,a major challenge that limits the potential applications in the SOI-based photonic integrated circuits (PICs) is the strong birefringence and thus polarization dependence in the silicon nanowire waveguides. The on-chip polarization handling thus received extensive interests recently.
