Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were layer-by-layer assembled onto silica microspheres to form MWCNTs/SiO2 composites.Characterizations of this stationary phase confirmed that MWCNTs was successfully attached on the silica surface layer-by-layer.The composite was used as a stationary phase in HPLC for the separation of many kinds of aromatic compounds. The separation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) effected by the number of MWCNTs layers on the SiO2 was investigated.Retention times and peak widths of PAHs were influenced by MWCNTs assembly layer, size of conjugation aromatic ring of PAHs, types and content of organic additives in mobile phase as well. When the MWCNTs layer increasing to 5 (MWCNTs/SiO2-5), PAHs can be completely separated (Fig.1).
