Stigma exsertion rate is emphasized as a component increasing the efficiency of hybrid seed production in rice.In order to investigate the genetic basis of stigma exsertion rate,a F2 population consisting of 192 plants and derived from a cross between a Philippine cultivar,Pokhreli and a photoperiod-thermo-sensitive genic male sterile line,9802S,was developed and 120 evenly distributed SSR markers were employed to construct the linkage map.Linkage analysis revealed the existence of three QTLs for stigma exsertion rate,qES4,qES6,and qES9,which located on chromosome 4,6,and 9,respectively.Among that,qES6 was a major QTL with large effects and the 9802S locus increased stigma exsertion rate.qES4 and qES9 showed minor effect on stigma exsertion rate.The three QTLs totally explained 50% of the phenotypic variation in the F2 population based on a multiple-QTL mode.The presence of a digenic inter-action between qES4 and qES6 was clearly suggested.
