Chitosan and chitosan derivatives are becoming increasingly important natural polymers because of their unique combination of properties like biodegradability,biocompatibility and bioactivity,in addition to attractive physical and mechanical properties.Carboxymethyl chitosan was prepared by reacting chitosan with chloroacetic acid in water under microwave irradiation.The effect of the reaction conditions was studied.The influence of mass ratio of chloroacetic acid to chitosan and time of microwave irradiation was investigated.The absorption kinetics of Cu (Ⅱ) ions using carboxymethyl-chitosan was also studied.
