Objective: To evaluate the immunomodulatory effect of Aegle marmelos, Cyperus rotundus, Psidium guajava and Zingiber officinale on intracellular killing of heat stable toxin (ST) producing enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) by macrophages.Materials and Methods: The effect of the decoctions of the above mentioned plants on intracellular killing of ETEC TX1 was assessed using murine monocytic cells, J774.Results: The decoctions of all four plants at concentrations < 1% enhanced intracellular killing of ETEC TX1 by J774 cells.P.guajava was the most effective.However, at higher concentrations the decoctions induced apoptosis in J774 cells which could be an artifact of in vitro system occurring as a consequence of macrophage activation.Conclusion: The study demonstrates that these plants could be effective in controlling diarrhoea caused by ST producing E.coli.The study also highlights the need for using appropriate and wherever necessary multiple bioassays for studying the activity of medicinal plants.
