1.Nutritional concepts for treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases.Inflammation is defined as one of the first responses of the immune system to injury. When the injury is not eliminated, resolution of the inflammatory processes is hampered and the inflammation may become destructive and even chronic.Examples of chronic inflammatory diseases are inflammatory bowel disease (IBD),chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD),multiple sclerosis (MS),rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA).Dietary components are known to contain potentially immunomodulatory, including anti-inflammatory,activity.For example,an extract of the edible plant Humulus lupulus (hop) has shown to be a selective inhibitor of COX-2 (Hougee,Faber et al.2006).Another edible plant,Centella asiatica (Gotu Kola),was able to inhibit the zymosan-induced cartilage degradation in vivo without affecting the zymosan-induced inflammatory cell infiltration and joint swelling (Hartog,Smit et al.2009).A combination of the nutritional components glycin and bovine lactoferrin demonstrated a synergistic anti-inflammatory effect on zymosan-induced skin inflammation (Hartog,Leenders et al.2007).Therefore,nutritional concepts might be a new option for the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases.
