The World Health Organization (2004) estimates there are 24.2 millions dementia and 207 millions psychiatric patients worldwide. With aging populations the increasing prevalence and incidence of dementia and consequent disability will place additional burden on patients, their families, caregivers and society. Those with dementia have increase mortality. It is not uncommon for Alzheimers disease (AD) patients to show depressive behaviors. It has been suggested that those with depression and/or diabetes will have an increased risk of dementia and a higher probability of earlier death. There is a growing interest in exploring the comorbidity between psychological and physical diseases.Dementia and depression share similar neurodegenerative mechanisms, including inflammatory processes, shrinking neurotrophic factors, and changes in neuronal plasticity. Some studies suggest patients with diabetes and depression increase their risk of having dementia. Our previous findings demonstrate that patients with incident dementia and pre-existing psychiatric condition suffer with increased hazard and shorter survival.Relatively little research has explored the relationships among depression, diabetes, dementia, and death (4D).We use epidemiological and biostatistical methods and prospective administrative health data to untangle these relationships. This research will offer solid data to help explain the 4D connections providing biologically and clinically plausible mechanisms of action, and providing a timely and useful portrait of the current status and trends in depression, diabetes, and dementia among seniors in Canada.
