Background: Older adults world-wide are becoming obese at an alarming rate.In the United States, 36.6% of all men and 42.3% of all women over 60 are obese. In African Americans, the percent goes up to 37.8% in men and 55.5% of women over 60 (Flegal, 2012).The World Health Organization reports that worldwide over 200 million men and nearly 300 million women were obese in 2011.Purpose: To understand the challenges older adults face when trying to lose weight. The research: When older adults aged 80 and older were asked at what polint in their lives they became obese, retirement was cited as the time when they gained weight. The change in lifestyle after retirement meant less enery expended and more food consumed. All wanted to lose weight. When asked what they try to do to lose weight, they cited many small things they did such as portion control and avoiding sweets.Findings from another study looking at 70 obese older adults in Ireland and 70 in the the United States were that many obese older adults were unaware that they were obese and did not know what a BMI measures or means.Over twice as many Irish (46%) were happy with their weight as Americans (19%).Again, many small things had been tried unsuccessfully in order to lose weight.A focus group with older adults who have struggled with trying to lose weight revealed that these older adults are frustrated by their lack of sustainable success in weight loss. They felt that lack of knowledge is not the problem. They all understood that weight loss involves the balance of nutrition and exercise but found weight loss difficult, with weight lost quickly regained.Implications: More research is needed on the difficulty of losing weight among older adults who are basically healthy but want to lose weight before the advent of serious health consequences such as diabetes or reduced mobility.A greater understanding of that strategies can be successfully implemented could also contribute to reduced health care costs by preventing diseases which are costly in terms of health care dollars as well as quality of life for the individual.
