Zanthoxylum avicennae(Lam.) DC(Rutaceae) is an evergreen shrub distributed in Vietnam,Philippines,southern China,and Taiwan.Previous studies of this plant have reported the isolation of flavonoids,alkaloids,coumarins,and terpenoids.Investigation on EtOAc-soluble fraction of the stem bark of Z.avicennae has led to the isolation of two new chromenocoumarins,(E)-avicennone(1) and 8-formylalloxanthoxyletin(2),along with 9 known compounds,including five coumarins,alloxanthoxyletin(2),avicennol methyl ether(3),cis-avicennol methyl ether(4),avicennin(5),avicennol(6),a furoquinoline,γ-fagarine(7),two benzo[c]phenanthridine derivatives,norchelerythrine(8) and arnottianamide(9),and a triterpene,β-amyrin(10).This symposium describes the structural elucidation of 1 and 2 and the inhibitory activities of all isolates on superoxide generation and elastase release by neutrophils.
