Multivariate analyses of eye movements during reading test effects of correlated visual (V;word length, character complexity),cognitive (C;frequency, predictability),and oculomotor (O;launch site) variables or constraints on either fixation durations or fixation locations. There is need for joint analyses of these two dependent variables, because, from a dynamical perspective, fixation locations are the result of parafoveal processing (dependent on V-C-O constraints) and previous fixation durations and, along with V-C-O constraints, have their own effect on associated fixation durations.Comparisons of reading traditional and simplified Chinese scripts afford inferences about the relative weight of V-C-O constraints on fixation locations and durations. They contribute to an understanding of the underlying dynamics of eye movement control during reading of character-based aswell as alphabetic scripts.
