Legume plants adapt their root system to environmental conditions by modulating lateral root development and additionally by forming nitrogen-fixing nodules following a symbiotic interaction with Rhizobia soil bacteria.Genetic data indicate that root and nodule development involves related regulatory pathways, including phytohormonal controls. An example is the cytokinin phytohormone which locally regulates lateral root and nodule organogeneses antagonistically (1, 2, 3).
