The freshwater biota,and particular the riverine biota,is the most vulnerable component of the earths biodiversity.An extraordinarily high proportion of freshwater fish are at risk,for example.There are two reasons for the vulnerability.Firstly the riverine biota is vulnerable because rivers are very small and specialized habitats.Secondly the biota is vulnerable because rivers attract people-who use them for water for domestic and agricultural purposes,for transport,for electricity generation,as a source of food and as a location for recreation.
