The flood defense history of China is essentially a history of the peoples struggle against Yellow River floods because the floods were disastrous and training of the river was most challenging due to the heavy sediment load.There was centurys debate on whether the levees should be close or far apart for mitigating flood hazards.The wide channel theory is to confine the river within a wide river valley with levees and divert flood water and sediment with diversion channels.
