Since nonaqueous capillary electrophoresis (NACE) was first introduced by Walbrohel et al in 1984, NACE has become an active area in Analytical Chemistry.The benefits of NACE have been described in a number of recent publications.The wide use of organic solvents, with their very different physicochemical properties, makes it easy to manipulate separation selectivity.The lower current present in non-aqueous solvents allows the use of high electric field strengths and wide bore capillaries, the latter in turn allowing larger sample load.Importantly, the analytes solubility can also be enhanced.Hitherto, NACE has proven to be the most useful technique on the analysis of pharmaceutical drugs and their metabolites, which is difficult to separate in normally aqueous media.NACE has been successfully applied to the analysis of a large number of pharmaceuticals including: acidic and basic drugs, chiral compounds, peptides, ions and preservatives.
