Introduction:Nearly 90% of all fractures of the spine occur in the thoracolumbar region and burst fractures account for approximately 58~ 81% of all thoracolumbar fractures.l~ 4 Burst fractures often occur in younger patients, cause a neurological deficit and present a significant economic burden to family and society.2,4,5 Surgical treatment of these burst fractures in thoracolumbar spine is still controversial, but is gaining momentum.Advances in spinal instrumentation have brought short-segment instrumentation into successful clinical practice.Pedicle screw instrumentation makes it possible to achieve better correction of kyphotic deformity, greater initial stability, early painless mobilization, and indirect decompression of spinal canal.6~ 10 On the other hand, the results of a short-segment posterior stabilization are not always good.Reported recurrent kyphosis with or without material failure are not uncommon after implant removal.11 ~ 16 However, studies on this issue are relatively scarce, and the clinical significance of recurrent deformity is uncertain. Moreover, previous studies emphorased a loss of correction after implant removal due to the collapse of the disc space.13,17 The effect of the reduction of a fractured vertebra on final kyphotic deformity is ignored.
