Viral satellite RNAs (satRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs that depend on their associated virus (helper virus) for replication and spread in plants. Some satRNAs exacerbate disease phenotypes by inducing their own symptoms in infected host plants, but the majority attenuates the symptoms caused by their helper viruses. How satRNAs modulate viral disease symptoms has been a longstanding question.
